For Cancer Patients?
How Exercise Can
Improve Your Mood, Increase Energy & Prevent Recurrence Of Cancer
Disease and
cancer treatment-related side effects such as decreased energy level, muscle weakness, and
declines in functional status and body mass have been well documented.
Fatigue could be a sign of the cancer
itself or a side effect from cancer therapy. Symptoms of fatigue can include nausea,
tiredness, stress, depression, anxiety, change in activity level or rest patterns, loss of
appetite, and weight changes.
A lot of cancer patients are more
concerned about fatigue than the cancer pain.
Exercise can help
combat such fatigue.
There is also a growing scientific
evidence that suggests that physically fit cancer patients can fight the disease better,
improve their quality of life, and may even live longer.
Specific exercise programs for cancer
patients may provide an effective means of ameliorating the neuromuscular effects of
treatment.
Many studies have found that exercise
had a positive effect on physical and psychological functioning of cancer patients while
in treatment.
Physical activity may boost the immune
system's ability to suppress cancer cells. When one exercises, weight and body fat can be
reduced, which could produce a lower estrogen level. Exercise speeds the passage of food
through the digestive system, possibly leaving less time for carcinogenic substances to
damage the intestines and colon.
"I had 3rd stage lung cancer (due to
smoking and other bad habits) more than 10 years ago and heart diseases 15 years ago. .I
was put through a few rounds of Chemo during those agonising months.
Paul
encouraged me to take up simple forms of exercises to keep me mobile, keep me strong,,
reduce the pain and fatigue associated with treatment, to make me feel healthy and cope
with the depressions I was having due to the ailment.
I
have not only survived from the cancer and its debilitating effects, my overall
health and fitness is actually is much better than than 20years ago before I had any
illnesses (I also had heart disease, diabetes, stroke etc).. Doctors think its a miracle
for me to survive so well. I believe it is due to the healthy lifestyle I embarked,
together with the positive, never give up attitude that allowed me to live longer than I
was intended to. And of cause Paul who always motivate me, taught and encouraged me in all
my physical activities and exercises"

Your
blood cells and the relation to exercise
Chemotherapy treatment procedure
affects all cells that grow rapidly: cancer cells, white and red blood cells. The part of
the red blood cell that carries oxygen is called hemoglobin. If hemoglobin levels drop
below normal levels, it is called anemia. Most chemotherapy patients develop anemia during
the course of their treatment. As a result, you have a reduced amount of oxygen being
transported to all parts of your body, causing you to feel tired.
Another concern is your higher risk of
infection. White blood cells help to protect your body from infection and disease. When
this cell counts drop below a normal range, it is called neutropenia
causing your body to have less ability to fight infection.
Your blood levels should serve as a
guide to your exercise plans when you are on active treatment.
Is there a
standard exercise prescription for cancer?
There are over 100 different
categories of cancer, which with its own characteristics, risks and concerns. Further no
two cancer survivors are alike. Exercise preferences, tolerance levels, goals, fitness
levels, and schedules all play an important role in the program. Some may need
conservative approach, others require more aggressive approach. So there is no standard
exercise recommendations for cancer patients.
How can we help
you?
Because of the
above factors concerning exercise for cancer, it is difficult for anyone to design an
ideal program for the survivor. So, we designed the Health-Transformation-Program
for Cancer Patients (HTPcancer) to specifically help cancer survivors attain the
following goals:
decreasing body fat
improving metabolism
increasing cardiovascular endurance
increasing lean
muscle mass
increasing
functional and work capacity
increasing maximum
workloads & time to exhaustion
rechanneling stress
increasing flexibility
increasing strength in the chest, arms, back and legs
decreasing nausea
and fatigue
improving natural
defense mechanisms
